Last Blast of Summer Ideas
It may be August, but summer isn’t over yet! If busy summer schedules and crazy travel plans kept you from celebrating the summer season, here are five last blast of summer ideas to enjoy before Labor Day weekend.
#1 Go Camping
If summer schedules kept you from a family (or friends) vacation, take a last minute road trip for a weekend of camping. Whether you set up camp in your backyard or travel to an official campground, make sure you plan all of the quintessential camping activities: build a campfire, go fishing, roast s’mores and star gaze. If visiting a campground, hit the hiking trails and remember to pack some of your favorite snacks like granola and trail mixes.
#2 Have a Beach Day
Nothing says summer more than a day at the beach. Pack your beach bag, gather up the fam and spend a day outside by the water. Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated and lots of sunscreen to protect against those UV rays. Looking for a natural sunscreen? Check out the EGW’s guide to summer sunscreens. If you’re not feeling the beach-bum vibes, bring along a frisbee or volleyball and have a friendly game with your crew. Remember to make a healthy, hearty breakfast before you head out for a day of fun in the sun.
#3 Host a Backyard BBQ
Who doesn’t love a backyard BBQ? If you didn’t have time to attend a summer cookout this year, host a themed cookout for family, friends and neighbors. Ask everyone to bring their favorite dish to pass and share with all of the guests. String up some outdoor twinkle lights, fire up the grill and set up some games like bags or croquet. Elevate traditional summertime staples like grilled corn on the cob by setting up a build your own corn on the cob bar complete with seasonings and dipping sauces. Yum!
#4 Attend an Outdoor Community Event
Summer is packed with an array of outdoor community events including outdoor workout classes, movies in the park, outdoor concerts and so much more. Take a look at your local community calendar and see what’s happening, then choose your favorites to attend before the summer season ends. If you’ve missed your favorite movie in the park, host an outdoor movie night at your own home. Be sure to pop some popcorn and have a stack of blankets so everyone can snag a spot and enjoy the feature!
#5 Explore the Farmers Market
One of our favorite things about summer is exploring local farmers markets. From fresh summertime tomatoes to homegrown peaches, the community farmers market is stocked with some of the best seasonal produce. Although most farmers markets run through the end of October, summer markets usually have live entertainment, hot food vendors and so much more. So take some time to explore your local farmers market before the summer season ends.
